Recognising Chesterfield’s retail offering

Nothing annoys us more than when we hear people saying that Chesterfield town centre is dead.

We’ve been involved with the annual Chesterfield Retail Awards for five years now and we can categorically assure you it’s alive and kicking.

We were delighted to be able to attend the fifth annual Chesterfield Retail Awards this month, this time a black-tie affair in the Winding Wheel. Organised by our client Destination Chesterfield, the awards are a big event in the town’s calendar. They’re an opportunity to recognise all the businesses that contribute to the the town’s thriving retail economy.

And it is thriving. Chesterfield’s shop occupancy rate is consistently above the national average. Yes, high streets are suffering in a world of online retailers, but we are managing to keep people coming into our town and exploring the centre, and that is an achievement that should be celebrated.

Chesterfield Borough Council is also responding positively to the national change in shopping habits. It recognises that footfall into the town centre can be driven by increased residential accommodation. The old Post Office building is currently being transformed into luxury apartments and the former Co-Op building on Elder Way is set to become a Premier Inn hotel. A further hotel is set to be constructed at the Chesterfield Waterside development also.

There were 31 different retailers up for awards across 11 categories. We were delighted when our very own client Northern Tea Merchants on Chatsworth Road defended and retained their title of Food & Drink Retailer of the Year.

If you’re one of the naysayers about Chesterfield, get out in the the town and along Chatsworth Road and see for yourself the great many independent shops and stores that set us apart from other towns. Rather than heading straight to the national chains, check out Adorn jewellers in the Shambles, Ingmans on Burlington Street, Ibbotsons in the market square, DHC Countrywear in the Market Hall, Dotique and Blanc on Chatsworth Road and, of course, Northern Tea Merchants. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

You can find full list of all of the Chesterfield Retail Awards winners here. We’d like to extend our congratulations to not only all  the winners, but everybody involved in the awards – continue smashing the retail scene in Chesterfield!
